One does not know that much about life in a harem, as it was hermetically sealed. The women inside were living in utmost luxury, but they could leave the harem accompanied by someone in order to buy something at the bazaar or to go to the hamman, for example. The women of a harem came from all different cultures. They were from royal houses or courts and due to their provenance they were bearers of their culture on the highest level. They were educated and in the harem they had the possibility to pursue the things they liked. There were painters and poets among them, but music and dance represented a significant pastime as well.
